Welcome to "The Freedom to Roam - Empowering Women’s Journeys" Campaign

Join the Movement - Empower Your Journey
In today's world, the ability to move freely and safely should be a basic right, yet countless women face threats and insecurity during their daily commutes. Our campaign, "The Freedom to Roam - Empowering Women’s Journeys", is an initiative by The Stay Safe Global Charitable Trust aimed at empowering women commuters by enhancing safety, raising awareness, and driving actionable change.

Why This Campaign Matters

Recent reports, like the 2024 British Transport Police annual report, reveal a troubling rise in violent incidents against women on public transport.

The Stay Safe Global Charitable Trust has been diligently working on the "Freedom to Roam" campaign to shed light on the pressing issues women face while commuting.

Our long-standing efforts have recently been brought into sharper focus following comments from actress Saoirse Ronan, who has highlighted the alarming realities of women's safety in public spaces.

This campaign aims to capture and highlight the authentic experiences of women through their own words and stories. By doing so, we seek to provide invaluable insights which we will feedback to the Head of Women's Safety and Inclusive Travel at the UK Department for Transport. Together, through collaboration and shared voices, we aim to drive significant change and promote safer public spaces for all women.

Statistics further underscore the importance of this initiative:

Increased Violence: A significant spike in violence against women on public transportation has been recently reported, making it imperative to address these issues urgently.

16 Days of Activism: Though not affiliated, our campaign aligns with this global movement, highlighting the necessity to combat gender-based violence and create lasting change.

What We Aim to Achieve

Our campaign strives to:

Raise awareness about the dangers women face in public spaces through compelling stories and data.

Advocate for safety measures and influence policy changes by feeding our findings to policymakers.

Empower women by encouraging them to share their experiences and be part of a supportive community.

How You Can Get Involved

We invite participants to contribute by:

Participating in our 90-second video submission project, which anonymously captures the daily commute experiences of women, providing vital evidence for policymakers.

Please record a **90-second video** of your daily commute or journey through public spaces (e.g., streets, public transport, parks). You can narrate your experience as you film or record a voiceover after the event. Share how safe or unsafe you feel, describing any challenges or concerns you have.

Reflecting on a previous experience is equally valuable. You can also describe a past situation that made you feel unsafe and how it impacts your behaviour now. Describing the safety steps you take or your feelings during this journey is just as valuable in helping us understand how these experiences shape current behaviour.

Alternatively, if you do not wish to submit a video you could submit text detailing your experiences using public transport (which will be read by a SSGCT employee over footage of commuting).

Your **video will be anonymised**. However, your **voice** will be used as part of the narration. We ask that you **omit specific start and end points** of your journey and avoid filming any identifiable landmarks, addresses, or personal information.

Please avoid filming faces of the public where possible. You are legally allowed to film faces in public spaces, however trains are not considered public spaces.

Share personal stories and experiences related to commuting safety.

Engage in open dialogue and discussions on social media using our campaign hashtags.

Submission Guidelines

Keep your video to **90 seconds** in length.

Before submitting, please review the video or text to ensure no identifying details are visible.

Please submit via email to info@staysafeglobal.com or to @staysafeglobal on instagram.

By submitting a video you agree for this to be used for:

o

Use in Campaign Materials: Your video may be utilised as part of the campaign's promotional materials, helping to raise awareness and influence public opinion regarding women's safety.

o

Educational Usage: The footage may be included in educational materials aimed at training and informing organisations, policymakers, and the public about the realities of commuting as a woman.

o

Data Contribution: Videos contribute to a growing body of evidence that supports advocating for improved safety measures and policies in public spaces.

o

Anonymisation: We commit to ensuring all identifiable details are removed from the videos to maintain your privacy, although your voice might be used as part of the narration.

o

Consent for Use: By submitting a video, you explicitly consent to its use as outlined above.

Safety Advice:

Please do not actively seek out troublesome or unsafe situations. We are only looking for footage of a standard journey through public spaces—there is no need to capture any potentially risky behaviour.

Your safety is our top priority. If at any point filming makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, please stop immediately. Never film anything that makes you concerned for your safety.

Discreet filming is recommended. Please avoid drawing attention or putting yourself at risk. Your well-being is far more important than any footage you might capture.

Participation is completely voluntary. Nobody is under any obligation to take part, and anyone can withdraw at any point if they no longer wish to participate.

Avoid filming start and end points to protect your location.

Use discreet techniques, like holding the camera at waist level, to avoid attention.

Focus on non-identifiable landmarks to maintain privacy.

Exclude identifying information to keep anonymity.

Plan to film in safe, well-lit areas, at busier times of day.

Stay aware of your surroundings for safety.

Inform a trusted person about your filming plans.

Review footage to ensure no identifiable details are present.
